On your way to or from Hearst Castle - and up or down Highway 1 - lies Piedras Blancas and a curious sight. Hundreds of elephant seals make this spot their resting, mating and birthing ground. On your way to or from Hearst Castle - and up or down Highway 1 - lies Piedras Blancas and a curious sight. Hundreds of elephant seals make this spot their resting, mating and birthing ground. Watch these giants creatures rolling around, listen to their "burping" growls and spy a just-born little pup. Bring a windbreaker and binoculars if you have them. Dogs are OK, too, but bring the leash. Got questions? Just ask one of the Friends of The Elephant Seal volunteers - they've been protecting them for years.

You may have guessed by now that an overnight stay is in order if you're going to experience all that this area has to offer. If so, two thumbs up for the Cambria Shores Inn. One thumb is for location; it's right across from Moonstone Beach, has a boardwalk to the water and chairs for lounging. The other thumb is for the cleanliness, amenities and perks, including breakfast basket, DVD rentals and wifi, which are both free. Bonus thumb's up: This place is ultra dog-friendly (as is most of the town).

Described as a "hole in the wall" with generous portions, Medusa's has 5-star hot sauce and a shady patio for a quiet respite. Whether you prefer Carnitas or vegetarian options, come hungry and leave happy.

Or explore the tidepools and search for moonstones in the "sand". While we're on the subject, also try Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill and Moonstone Cellar... More >

Just beneath Hearst Castle is Sebastian's General Store and deli. A no-nonsense place with scrumptuous food that comes in hearty portions, it's welcoming and friendly. They also have indoor and outdoor seating, as well as wine tasting next door. Sebastian's is a win-win. More
