A Local's Guide to The Tenderloin

The Tenderloin has reputation for being a bit rough around the edges. Amongst the host of unsavory characters that lurk on every corner, it is home to some of the best places to eat, drink and stay at in San Francisco. So revive your sense of adventure and check your skepticism at the door.

Two words sum up up this San Francisco spot, "Dive Bar". Appropriately name because of its strategic position on top of the Stockton Street Tunnel, it has become a favorite of local hipsters and neighbors alike. Appropriately name because of its strategic position on top of the Stockton Street Tunnel, it has become a favorite of local hipsters and neighbors alike. Along with its rustic feel and broken neon sign, the Tunnel Top presents a great combination of good drinks, chill ambiance and diverse crowd that will take you back to that summer you spent in Europe. For the ladies there is a $6 watermelon gimlet or the $3 Snakebite. Something stronger you say? How about a Sunrise Tequila shot with a cold Tecate? The best part of this place is the plethora of DJ's that play outstanding music to accompany the mood, the beats will have you dancing in the narrow attic above the bar.
Fresh Southern flavor rules in the middle of the Tenderloin? Only in San Francisco. All you can eat brunch buffet and bottomless mimosas is where is at.This includes their flaky fried chicken, scrambled eggs and grits for only $16.50 accompanied by the jazzful sounds of the Bayonics. Drinks are also of great bargain if you get the "Stimulus Package" which includes a shot of Southern Bourbon with a PBR for $5. Jalapeno corn bread is delicious. Dirty rice and jambalaya dishes will be a nice compliment to any entre you choose. Chicken Andouille Sausage Gumbo and the Pulled Pork Sandwich are some of my favorite dishes.

Hotel Rex is one of the classiest places to stay in San Francisco. Eclectic and modern rooms give this Boutique hotel a cozier feel than larger chain establishments.

Finding a good seafood place in San Francisco is not very difficult, but finding one with a unique Vietnamese/Chinese mash up flavor is. Luckily, I've been fortunate to find Kim Thanh restaurant in the Tenderloin. I am big on crab and this place makes one of the best salt baked crabs around. It helps to order the garlic noodles to accompany your meal. The rich and savory clams in black sauce will have you licking your fingers. No dining would be complete without dessert, so the fried bananas with ice cream will top off this fabulous dining experience.

Part English pub, part sketchy neighborhood dive bar, Edinburgh Castle has a classic appeal to deliver a memorable night in the City. Hungry? The Fish & Chips at this place are amazing, with a flaky crust and wrapped in newspaper. No, your eyes do not deceive you, the fish and chips are brought in from an outside secret source know only to the owners and loyal hipsters. The drinks are poured with a heavy hand. From the typical drafts you'll find in a Pub in London, to one of the best trivia nights in the Bay, Edinburgh Castle remains a must visit gem in the heart of the Tenderloin.
I am big on crab and this place makes one of the best salt baked crabs around.
