San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California Hotels, Things to do, and Vacation Information.

San Francisco, one of the cosmopolitan gems of the world, offers travelers sophistication, history, and culture - along with the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

Romantic travelers will enjoy the City's many opportunities for hand-in-hand strolls, including the Palace of Fine Arts, with swans, fountains and stunning architecture. Venture up to China Town and poke around in the souvenir shops before grabbing a bit to eat at one of the many restaurants serving Dim Sum. Venture over to the Ferry Building for a delightful culinary adventure, San Francisco style. And for great views of the City, be sure to visit the Top of the Mark for a night cap.

Traveling with your children? Stop by the Exploratorium, an interactive children’s museum located in the Palace of Fine Arts. Fisherman's Wharf is another fun destination - besides the shops, eateries, candy and toy stores, don't miss the sea lions who hang out on the docks, noisly calling to each other with loud barks. And be sure to sample the delicious clam chowder, served in a famous bread bowl. As a finale, jump on a cable car from Fisherman's Wharf and ride it up over the hills, all the way to downtown. If you ask nicely, the conductor might even let you ring the bell!

Of course, a trip to San Francisco should include a visit to Golden Gate Park, where travelers and locals alike enjoy 1017 acres of museums, green knolls, Japanese tea gardens, and picnic areas. This San Francisco destination is perfect to take a stroll with your dog or play a game of softball with your friends. On weekends, the roads are closed off to automobiles, allowing two wheeled vehicles to take to the roads. Pretend you are a local by bringing a picnic lunch, a frisbee, and staking out your space in the park.

Alcatraz, the famous prison, starts with a ferry ride to the island. Pick up the cellhouse audio your for an insider’s look into life in a maximum security facility. Best to book your tour in advance - especially during peak tourist season, these trips sell out weeks in advance.

All this adventuring is bound to make a traveler tired and hungry - fortunately, San Francisco has hotels and restaurants for every budget. Stay downtown for easy access to the Moscone Convention Center and public transportation, or choose a bed and breakfast in a quieter part of the city. And spend some time deciding where to eat - San Francisco offers much in local, California cuisine, as well as a host of worldly cuisines for the discerning palate.
