Top Six Things to Do in San Bruno

San Bruno is a quiet community that sits just outside the limelight of San Francisco. This compact, hilly city is extremely pedestrian-friendly and easily accessed with BART, the light rail system connecting San Francisco with the entire Bay Area. This, along with the proximity to San Francisco International Airport makes San Bruno a great low-cost choice for a place to stay when you're visiting the area. A nice attribute about this tight-knit neighborhood packed with blue collar families and recent immigrants is that it shares many of the same attributes that make San Francisco so great, at a fraction of the cost. There is a huge selection of ethnic cuisine and shops in the main shopping district that are all within walking or biking distance of each other and several hotels and motels. A row of retro-style drinking and karaoke bars presents a nice entertainment option for something to do on the weekend.

Don Pico's has been a lively San Bruno institution since 1975, and real Mexican food doesn't get any more authentic than this. From their chimichangas to their tamales, the menu reflects a higher level of sophistication than Mexican restaurants you'll find elsewhere. Their crab enchiladas and ceviche sampler will take your tastebuds to Mexico and back, all for reasonable prices. As a bonus, there's a full bar with awesome Margaritas, and live music several nights a week.

I'm a vegetarian (or rather, pesca-tarian), and even I'll admit that Cleo's was a fun place to dine with my carnivore friends. While I chowed down on delicious prawns and buffet bar fixins, my friends had more cuts of roasted, char broiled and barbecued meats thrown at them then they could eat. It's a carnivore's dream. The atmosphere at this all-you-can-eat-meat joint is fun, super casual and lively. Although some may say it's a step down from other local churrascarias, Cleo's reflects what makes San Bruno such a laid back town; good prices, a comfortable setting and a great place to just hang with friends. Any restaurant that can make it for more than a couple of years in the Bay Area obviously has something special to offer. Cleo's d... More >

San Bruno is a tourist destination in its own special way. The city sees a lot of tourists because they're typically on an overnight layover at adjacent San Francisco International Airport or taking an early morning flight. If you have to stay overnight, rather than pick one of the dozens of chain hotels in San Bruno, pick Villa Montes for a far greater bang for your buck. This luxury hotel has everything a traveler needs; comfy beds and super clean rooms, a free (real) breakfast, wine and cheese hour, wifi and even a sauna. If you want to get out and stretch your legs a bit, there are a number of bars and restaurants within walking distance. All this for rooms that start at about $100, which isn't much more than the local economy motels down the street charge. I'd rather stay here than anywhere else in the city.

As you drive up Highway 101 from San Francisco Airport, you'll notice huge letters that say "South San Francisco: The Industrial City" emblazoned on a hillside. Look west from there and you'll see San Bruno Mountain, one of the best places to catch a panoramic view of the Bay Area. San Bruno Mountain State Park's mountain has a 1,314 foot elevation that rises high up over the Pacific, giving you a perfect place to picnic, hike or just hang out on a sunny afternoon. If the fog has lifted, be sure to drive up the summit on Radio Road, where you'll see a panoramic view from San Franisco to Oakland to San Jose, one that far surpasses any views in San Franciso itself. There's also an old missle silo site marker that tells of of the important role this mountain played during World War II. It costs $5 to get into the park, but it's $5 well spent.
