Discovering Salinas

Salinas exists at the somewhat unusual crossroads of high literature and commercial agriculture. It had already been an established farming region for half a century before John Steinbeck's birth there in 1902. The author would later feature the city and region in many of his best-known works, and it proudly bears the imprint of his presence to this day.

The National Steinbeck Center contains exhibits and memorabilia related to the famous author and his work. The museum provides interesting insights into the region's history and mentality whether or not you've read Steinbeck's books.
Salinas offers quite a selection of chain motels, but for price and convenience the Quality Inn is a sound choice. With a free continental breakfast, high-speed internet, a fridge and microwave in each room, it covers all the bases.

Oldtown Salinas is an attractive district full of restaurants, galleries, spas, and historic buildings. Further entertainment options include a movie theater and wine tasting venues, but a simple stroll down the street is a delightful experience.
This Chinese restaurant has been part of the Salinas landscape for more than 15 years. From the outside, it's not terribly impressive, but the food is consistently good, affordable, and surprisingly authentic.
Fixed-price lunches are served in John Steinbeck's childhood home by volunteers in period-appropriate costumes. It's a unique local experience not to be missed!

The Farm is both a produce stand and a working facility that demonstrates the reality of organic farming. There are also a small petting zoo and a sculpture garden on the premises; visitors can tour them all and even get a chance to do a little farm work themselves. More
