A Day Out in Redding

Just off Highway 5, Redding is the largest city in California north of Sacramento. For the most part, it's a quiet place, but there are some fun attractions worth stopping for. The highly recognizable Sundial Bridge alone cries out to be photographed.

This casual Italian eatery has a reputation for great food and warm service. Pasta and Chicago-style pizza take center stage, although the lunch menu also features sandwiches.
The Turtle Bay complex comprises a large botanical garden with eleven themed areas, a museum of natural history and science related to the region, and a camp-themed area that shows off animals and the area's history. It's fun for children and adults!
A number of original buildings still stand, including the restored county courthouse with a collection of historical exhibits and California artwork.

Most of Redding's hotel choices are chain motels geared toward road trippers passing through. This Travelodge is no exception, but it garners consistently high ratings for comfort, hospitality, and cleanliness.
You don't necessarily expect to find good Mexican food this far from the border, but La Cabana is an excellent, if unprepossessing, place for it. Prices are good, service is fast and friendly, and the food is worth going back for over and over. The breakfast burrito is especially recommended!
