Pismo Beach on a Budget

Hand-7764

Pismo Beach calls itself the Clam Capital of the World, and some know it as Bugs Bunnys elusive destination. Fortunately, you can just drive there instead of getting lost in tunnels underground. You cant miss Pismo Beach from route 101 or Pacific Coast Highway. Aside from resort hotels, there are many little motels and inns that are less expensive. Look for cheaper lodging in nearby Shell Beach, an unsung neighbor with its own charm. You can while away an entire day just strolling down Pomeroy Avenue toward the pier, shopping, drinking, and dining, and catching live music.

Cheles is one of the last restaurants on the street before the pier begins, and so the patio seating overlooks the shore. Anytime I travel north of Santa Barbara, I always stop at this restaurant for the clam chowder served in a sourdough bowl. Its a great relaxing lunch for a low cost. Cheles has a diner-type feel to it but a typical seaside menu. The waiting area displays a lot of kitschy souvenir goods for sale.

Like any good beach community, Pismo has its share of delightful parks. Dinosaur Caves Park has a wonderful play area for the kids complete with dinosaur eggs and a dinosaur. This location is great for photo ops.
Mon Ami is a creperie right next to the Pismo Beach Hotel on the main drag. We stopped in here during a camping trip that was too cold. Perfect place to get a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and indulge in a swweet or savory crepe - chocolate is always our go-to flavor, that is a surprising treat for a beach trip.
Vino Versato means "the wine pour," and this hip bar pours for free during Wednesday evening wine tastings. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays, too.
The people are lovely.
