Tasting Oakland

Living in Oakland provides constant engagement and expansion of the tastebuds. Warning! This list is intended for indulgent eaters and is likely to overwhelm the average palette.

Our day can begin at one of the city's many hearts, Jack London Square. Our day can begin at one of the city's many hearts, Jack London Square. If you can think of a better way to start the morning than walking alongside boats and near one of the state's most extensive shipping harbors, that's fine! There are many great ways to start a morning in Oakland. The reason we're at Jack London Square, however, is to take advantage of the hearty breakfasts the nearby Fat Lady. This historic restaurant is dim and cozy, with plates that will satisfy everyone. True, all the meals are great here; I like the brunch because of its fancy platters and special "hair of the dog" cocktails.
As an alternative to the Fat Lady, venture into the industrial core of West Oakland, an unlikely location for this absolute gem of a brunch spot. The Brown Sugar Kitchen serves immaculate soul food, with waffles that are glazed to crispy perfection, jambalaya that will spice you awake and an unforgettable mac 'n cheese.

After strolling Lake Merritt, stopping in some local shops and surely being tempted to enter one of the area's other promising restaurants, we'll settle on Boot and Shoe. Not only does it always have the longest line on the block, its food and atmosphere makes it a triple threat. I almost always go with the Wild Nettles pizza, a delicious rendition of this otherwise angry plant.
Finally, we go to Flora, near downtown Oakland to unwind over cocktails. The list of spirits here is incredible, and the cocktails are inventive mixes that never cease to impress. The building is worth seeing on its own; once a flower shop, it has maintained its name and its original art deco look with exacting loveliness.
