Family Fun in Oakland

Oakland is an interesting and eclectic town. There is plenty to see and do: there is the Oakland Zoo and the Oakland Museum, Lake Merritt, and Tilden Park; there is a great variety of restaurants of every ethnicity, and plenty of nightlife. Oakland tends to have warmer weather in the summer than other parts of the Bay Area.

I take my kids to the Oakland Zoo every year. Growing up, San Francisco Zoo was the zoo I knew, but I haven't been back there since I had kids of my own. The main reason I prefer Oakland is the weather. While the SF zoo is close to the ocean and tends to be windy and foggy, the Oakland Zoo is in the rolling hills and the weather is sunny and warm for more than half the year. Another nice thing about the Oakland Zoo is that the habitats for the animals are big and spread out, and generally don't look like places where the animals would mind living. Finally, the Oakland Zoo has rides; just a few, but the kids love them!
The Oakland Museum of California encompasses 3 levels of California art, history and culture. There are many interactive exhibits and games for kids. It is a great place for families, and a wonderful rainy day activity.
