A Local's Look at Muir Beach
Muir Beach is a small, funky community perched on the hills around and above the beach. There isn't really a town here, just some nice houses, an inn with a restaurant, a great beach, and a lot of really tall trees. This is a wonderful place to get back to nature. It's peaceful and calm and extremely beautiful.
The Pelican Inn is an authentic English-style pub and inn. There are just seven rooms, each with a canopy bed. Green Gulch is not a hotel, it is a Buddhist practice center. This is obviously not the place for people looking for a swinging night life, or for people who wish to stay with young children. Green Gulch is not a hotel, it is a Buddhist practice center. This is obviously not the place for people looking for a swinging night life, or for people who wish to stay with young children. However, it is a wonderful, reasonable place to stay for people who want to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet. You can join in meditations if you wish. You can walk from here to Muir Beach or the Pelican Inn, and it's a short drive to Muir Woods. Three tasty vegetarian meals are included in the price of lodging. Much of the food is grown on-site at Green Gulch Farms, which is worth a visit even if you decide not to stay.

This is a beautiful beach, and just a short drive from Mill Valley. This beach is popular with dog-owners, and hikers who enjoy exploring the hills above the beach. Beyond the rocks at the North end of the beach is the clothing-optional area.

A visit to Muir Woods is an absolute must for anyone coming to Marin County. This is a beautiful. peaceful place with Redwood trees that are hundreds of years old. Get out of the vicinity of the visitor center, and you will quickly escape the crowds. There are many hiking trails to explore. My favorite is about a 2-mile loop. Be sure to check out the ladybug colonies.
Visiting Muir Woods is good for the soul.
This is a great place for families with young children to explore and learn about nature. Kids can milk goats and card wool, and parents can enjoy the amazing scenery. There's also an excellent summer day camp for kids. Advanced reservations needed.
