Monterey Bay Area

Monterey Bay is the place we return to most frequently for vacations. We find a home base accomodation in the area, then enjoy activities in Big Sur, Carmel, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove as well as Monterey. Embassy Suites usually has a good deal with lots of room ... and offers a hot breakfast in the price. However, the B&Bs and small Inns in Pacific Grove are some of our favorite places to stay, too. Post Ranch Inn is the BIG Splurge. Driving Hwy. 1 through Big Sur (stopping to hike a few beaches and trails), a day at Pt. Lobos, 17 Mile drive ... are some of my favorite places to visit.

Warm, inviting early 20th century B&B along the Bay front drive in Pacific Grove (close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium). We usually get up early and walk along the ocean path and watch the sea otters & seals play. There are several other great B&Bs along this same drive.
The most beautiful and varied park/reserve in the US in my opinion. It has tide pools, magestic views, Monterey Cypress groves, and scores of wildlife. You won't be overwhelmed by too many people and there's something for everyone. Each trail has a new surprise. We've seen otters, sea lions, deer and once ... a mt. lion. The tid... More >

You won't be overwhelmed by too many people and there's something for everyone. Each trail has a new surprise. We've seen otters, sea lions, deer and once ... a mt. lion. The tide pools have yielded various colored starfish, aneome, baby eels, gumboot chiton, abolone, sea urchines and anenome. We've seen every CA sea bird you can imagine, birthing seals and much more. It's a photographer's dream!
It's unlike any other drive I've done in the U.S.
Another place to hike or kayak in the Monterey Bay area. Lots of sea lions and otters and birds. Very serene. But see Pt. Lobos first!
There is no way to describe in words the beauty and awesomeness of Hwy. 1 through Big Sur. It's unlike any other drive I've done in the U.S. Pfieffer Beach, McWay Falls (in photo above), and many state parks that are fabulous short hikes from the road.
A Pebble Beach club, down 17 mile drive from the main Pebble resort. I like Spanish Bay even better. The food is more interesting (Roy's restaurant), the tide pools are great, and there's a nature trail through the dunes. Bagpipes are played by a kilted scottsman at dusk to "put the golf gods to sleep." There are small gathering places around fire pits outside, to watch the sunset and sip a drink. The golf isn't bad, either. Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills, Spyglass - My husband plays them all whenever he has the opportunity. :-)
You won't be overwhelmed by too many people and there's something for everyone.
Easy 17 mile drive with spectacular coastal views.  More
