Weekend Getaway in Los Angeles with Kids

Thinking of a fun getaway with the kids? A weekend in Los Angeles isn't as daunting as it sounds - there's lots to do with your kids that won't make the adults tear out their hair. And sure it's glamorous, but a weekend in L.A. doesn't have to be expensive, either. Whether it's a day at the beach or an afternoon checking out celebrities, there's a lot to do in L.A. that's fun for the whole family, and you don't have to be Paris Hilton to afford it.

Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn is an affordable hotel that's centrally located - it's walking distance from Universal Studios and a few minutes from Hollywood. They also feature KidSuites, nifty rooms with a separate partitioned area with bunk beds and its own flat-screen TV. Not that you wouldn't want to spend every waking moment with those kids of yours, of course.
If you think you're going to get away with not visiting Disneyland during a weekend in L.A. you're mistaken. Don't fight it, just head on out to Anaheim and I guarantee once you step inside the gates onto Main Street, you'll be just excited as your kids. I'd even go so far as to say the place is MAGICAL.

Your daughter will love the American Girl store, and your son will love riding the trolley that takes you from one end of the mall to the other. Also, don't miss the adjacent original Farmer's Market - one of my favorite places in the city to eat and hang out.
There's something for the whole family here dining, shopping, the Pacific Pier Amusement park and all against the backdrop of one of the most famous beaches in the world. You might recognize the historic carousel from Paul Newman's "The Sting."
Complete sensory overload, but totally worth it. This shopping/dining/people-watching complex is the official gateway to Universal Studios but is a destination in itself. Lots of restaurants and eateries to please all palates. Your kids will love the leaping fountains, but you might want to pack some extra, dry clothes.

A great non-traditional museum destination for young children, Kidspace is one of those places that makes adults say, "I wish this was around when I was a kid." Featuring everything from elaborate indoor climbing towers to an outdoor amphitheater and tricycle track, the museum is a one-of-a-kind hands on environment. One bit of advice: take your own food. For some reason the snack stands were closed during my last two visits. More
