Forget the chain restaurant with the piped-in mariachi music. Julie says some of her favorite Mexican food comes from a gas station. Yes, you heard right. "I love many places for Mexican food," she says. "For tacos al pastor I go to Tacos Leo at the 76 gas station at the corner of La Brea and Venice." Tacos Leo serves authentic tacos a... More >

"I love many places for Mexican food," she says. "For tacos al pastor I go to Tacos Leo at the 76 gas station at the corner of La Brea and Venice." Tacos Leo serves authentic tacos al pastor on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights after 7:30pm. "We love their tacos, the chilaquiles, the chicharrones de queso and trying the specials," Julie adds. Bonus: You can fill up the rental car at the same time.

"For Thai food I am loyal to Jitlada," Julie says of the restaurant known for its tongue-searing spicy cuisine. "The menu features an astounding number of dishes. My friend has been documenting the menu and I have been with her for many lunches in her quest to taste everything on the menu. My favorites are morning glory salad, the crispy honey duck, and learning how to eat some seriously spicy food. (I used to be a wimp.)"
eatery that's been a destination for the L.A.
With the seemingly endless number of Italian restaurants in L.A. picking just one can difficult. Julie seems to have tried them all, but here are two that top her list. My family loves Angelini Osteria for everything on the menu especially the lamb chops and Nonna'a lasagna topped with crispy spinach leaves, she says of the popular L.A. restaurant specializing in country Italian cuisine. And for something a little more exotic, Julie heads downtown. I love Drago Centro, especially Chef Celestino Dragos papardelle with pheasant.
Ordering late-night room service is so five minutes ago. For those midnight (and later) cravings, Julie recommends heading to this famous L.A. eatery that's been a destination for the L.A. after-hours crowd for decades. "Canters is open 24 hours and always has a very L.A. crowd eating late or hanging out in the Kibbitz Room," she says.... More >

"For me it means having authentic food from around the world," she said, prefacing her list of everything from Guatemalan food to down home ramen. But for a truly current L.A. experience, "score a reservation at Ludo Lefebvre's LudoBites pop up restaurant," she said, referring to the chef's temporary restaurant installation - a trend that's all the rage from Los Angeles to New York. "The first time I ate at LudoBites he served me a cold chorizo, cornichon & cantaloupe soup that sounded bizarre but tasted amazing. I have been a fan ever since."
But for a truly current L.A.
Let's face it - a trip to L.A. isn't complete without a star sighting. So where do you have the best chance of seeing George Clooney digging into a steak? "I run into celebs all over town, from the ritziest restaurants to the farmers market," Julie says. "Urth Caffe on Melrose and in Beverly Hills is usually a good bet. They make delicious Spanish Lattes that I order strong and not too sweet." Those with a little more clout... More
