Find Small Town Gems in Historic Jackson, Ca

I lived in Jackson for a brief period of time during college, and can credit this historic gold mining town with my newfound love of small towns. Things are quieter and slower, but no less enriching in a place where people are friendly and the history is a part of who they are. Set amidst gorgeous foothill landscapes, Jackson - and the surrounding towns - have surprising depth while being altogether down to earth.

Mel & Faye's Diner Drive-In used to be perfect just the way it was - as an old run-down roadside diner. The burgers - when the condiments were layered just right - were good enough to attract people from out of town. Kennedy has a gift shop, picnic grounds, group or self-guided tours, and of course many tales of bravery and tragedy. It is open year-round.

Whether you like food, gambling or just something new, the newly remodled Jackson Rancheria is yet another remote California Indian-run casino looking for your patronage. Some come for the Seafood Extravanganza Buffet alone, but there's also a food court with various offerings. For gamblers, Jackson Rancheria has it all: roulette, 3 and 4-card poker, craps, 5 and 10-dollar backjack tables, slots, etc. What is different here is that it's an 18 and up casino, meaning there's no booze but plenty of adrenaline when everyone's cheering each other on.
