This Sacramento suburb is a terribly underrated travel destination. The mix of open space, historical charm, and friendly locals make Folsom a fun place to stay and play. Conveniently, it's only about a half-hour drive to or from the heart of the capital.

Historic Sutter Street is a few blocks of old-time charm. Covered walkways and colorful storefronts evoke the Gold Rush era, and visitors can shop in boutiques, candy stores, and galleries. There are plenty of eating options on the street, and a small museum on local history.
