Eureka Weekend with Kids

I recommend bed and breakfasts whenever possible, and Carter House is no exception: it's more expensive than the 'chain' motels, but makes up for it in location (right in the heart of things), charm, and room...some suites even have kitchens. It's no frills (you won't find perfection), but the breakfast is good and everything is homey!

Before heading out for the day to hike, bike, or beachcomb, pick up some sandwiches at Hole in the Wall for lunch. They use all fresh ingredients, and kids can easily share one!

For a taste of history alongside your stack of flapjacks, head to this diner in touch with the old logging days in Eureka. Eat family style on long wooden benches and enjoy the fun ambiance! Moderate prices.

Headwaters Forest Trail

This excellent hike takes you through huge tree groves, meadows, and even a little mining town. Families will appreciate the easy terrain, and those who make it to the end of this one way in, one way out trail will be rewarded by towering Redwoods!

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

Drive outside Eureka toward Crescent City to visit this small state park with old growth forests, lots of wildlife, picnic areas, and day hikes. If you're lucky, you might spot Roosevelt Elk and whale flukes on the same day!
