At first glance, a nondescript little place called the "AA Lounge" located directly across the street from the Humboldt County jail might appear a little too seedy for respectable souls. But fear not, because if you're brave enough to walk through the front doors, you'll have the absolute best steak dinner in Northern California. The AA is an institution for locals of all walks of life, from bankers to fishermen to ex-cons who are just out on bail and having their first real meal in the last 30 days. The fabulously friendly mature waitresses will call you "honey" while taking your order, as the gristly bartenders serve up the stiffest, cheap drinks in town. After dinner enjoy a game of shuffleboard or just hang out and listen to the barkeep tell tales of the way Humboldt County used to be. Don't miss this place!

Once you hike the Headwaters Forest Trail, you'll see why tree sitter Julia Butterfly Hill sat in these ancient behemoths for two years in order to save them. The Elk River Trail is a one way in / one way out hiking path that's fairly level and easy, taking hikers through thick forests, open meadows, remnants of an old mining town and a few small stream crossings too. The ambitious hiker can take it all the way to the end to see a grove of ancient redwoods, but even if you don't make it there, you'll see that this leisurely hike is worth the trip. It's a pleasant place to spend the afternoon, and as a bonus, it's dog friendly too.
