On the surface, Salinas may seem like it is well past its heyday, but if you look a little bit, you will find it has a unique character and has a wide variety of attractions found nowhere else.

This sports complex is the home of the California Rodeo, and hosts many other events, such as monster truck shows and concerts. Bands such as the Eagles regularly play at this venue.
Toro County Park is Salinas' top location for horseback riding and hiking. Just half an hour from the coast it offers striking vistas of the Salinas Valley and Monterey Bay. The park is far enough inland to escape the marine influence and is therefore much warmer than the coast.

Aqueblue Day Spa is a full service spa that specializes in skin treatments and massages. Services include waxing, brow & lash defining services, and a full-service spa.
Recently opened under new management, the Penny Farthing Tavern is getting rave reviews by locals. The cuisine is typical pub fare with affordable prices and ample portions. The Penny Farthing adds a great deal of character to downtown Salinas, and is worth a stop.
As the name implies, this museum is dedicated to the famous writer, John Steinbeck. Permanent exhibitions include the John Steinbeck Exhibition Hall which showcases the author's life and gives insight into his character, which was the force behind such famous works as "The Grapes of Wrath" and "East of Eden".

The Courtyard Salinas Monterey is a 2 star hotel, but the service is exceptional and the rates are very reasonable. Smaller independent hotels in Salinas are not a good choice because they are often a bit run-down. Staying at a national brand like Marriott is always a good bet.  More
