Catalina Island On a Budget

Catalina Island isn't exactly a budget location, but there are places to go and things to do that aren't going to cost you a king's ransom. A family-friendly destination with plenty for kids to do, Catalina is one of those magical places that you'll never forget. Especially if you get seasick. I recommend stay above deck on the ferry, by the way. If you know what you're getting into ahead of time, you can save up for the fixed costs and plan accordingly.

The Catalina Flyer departs from the mainland at more than one location, but the closer you get to the island first, the better. Start at Newport Beach, and your ticket is only $68 round trip. The ride is usually smooth and quick, and refreshments are served on board for extra charge.
This little hotel right in the middle of Avalon, the city port of Catalina, is clean and quaint and offers a weekend package for less than $500, which is a good rate for this location. You can't beat its proximity to just about everything in Avalon.

You don't actually have to go to the beach club to enjoy Descanso Beach, which is free. It's a beautiful portside sandy beach where kids can play and if you have the extra cash saved up, why not splurge on seafood at the club?
On the other side of the bay from Descanso Beach you can sit and admire the opposite view at Armstrong's, which has a seaside seating option outside. Since it's also a fish market, the seafood options are fresh. The relaxed casual atmosphere means you won't have to dig too deeply in your pockets to fill your tummy.
Walk up the trail from town to the Conservancy's Nature Center, where you'll get information on hiking, cycling, camping, and where to view wildlife such as the herd of American bison that have been there since the 1920's when a small group were left here after the making of a film.
Diving is a pretty pricey undertaking, and tide pools will only show you so much.
