Angels Camp, California

Angels Camp, California Hotels, Things to do, and Vacation Information.

Angels Camp California is located in the central part of the state, and bills itself as “Home of the Jumping Frog.”  It’s a historic gold rush town, with a great location at altitude high enough to escape winter fog and summer heat.  Nearly 4000 gold miners descended on Angels Camp around 1850, and the surrounding area is honeycombed with old tunnels and mines.

Angels Camp is a family-friendly destination, with a new museum, local caverns, and water sports to keep the kids active.  Be sure to visit Moaning Caverns, where you can see California’s largest vertical chamber viewable by the public.  Travel Guides note that it’s large enough to hold the entire Statue of Liberty inside!  Kids and adults love the chance to explore (with guides), and the 165 foot rappel is the most popular Angels Camp activity.  Action-loving teens and young adults thrill with the chance to use the above-ground twin zip lines offered at Moaning Caverns.

For a more tranquil afternoon, we recommend the New Melones Lake, the fifth largest reservoir in California.  Angels Camp activities at the lake include excellent fishing, boating, swimming, mountain-biking, horseback riding, camping, nature walks and a museum/Visitor’s Center open in the summer months.  It’s a pet-friendly resort area, popular for family vacations and lodging.  You can camp, right on the beach!
