If you’re a frugal traveler, you worked through the December holidays and saved up your vacation days for a less expensive trip in January. You may have even planned ahead and asked for cash or travel vouchers in lieu of electronic gadgets for gifts. Your reward should be a winter getaway with fewer crowds and cheaper upgrades – if you know where to go.
Go Here In January
Orlando - After all the kids are back in school and all the holiday crowds have headed home, Orlando becomes a great place to escape the winter cold. Miami is another great Florida destination for January, but you’ll likely need to plan ahead more for the best rates on the most desirable hotels.
Colorado – If snow is more your thing, this is a perfect time to hit some of the best slopes in the country. Ski season really picks up in February and you can often take advantage of discounted rates and all-inclusive packages at ski resorts the first part of the year.
But Not Here
Las Vegas - conferences and conventions converge on Sin City throughout the first month of the year and finding a hotel room at a decent rate can be brutal for the average tourist. In fact, Vegas is reportedly completely sold out for the second weekend of January 2011 thanks to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
New York City – some travel experts will tell you that this is a perfect time to visit the big city because you have less people in town. But the people who just spent several days trapped in an airport because of a blizzard last month will warn you that hitting the northeast coast at this time of year requires gambling with Mother Nature. Bottom line: it’s dang cold, possibly snowy and icy, and you don’t even have big parades or pretty holiday lights to justify the frost bite. Go in November.
