Groningen for Bikes and College Kids

Groningen has more boats than T-Pain.

Groningen, a small city in the north of the Netherlands, is home to about 185,000 people, almost a third of which are college students.  It is also home to about a million bicycles – give or take.

When I visited Groningen I was a young man and the idea of a beautiful town filled with people of a similar age and bars that didn’t close until 7am seemed like a good one. It worked out pretty well.

The city is a relatively short train ride from Amsterdam which makes it a great day trip destination.  Among the sites I’d recommend are the University of Groningen, the Groninger Museum, and the Aa Church.  There are also a couple of red-light districts if that’s your thing.

Holiday Travel – Busiest Thanksgiving Airports

baggage-airport

This is what you won't see at airports this holiday season.

The good folks at Orbitz were nice enough to send along a list of the U.S. airports with the heaviest amount of holiday travel. They also offered up some words of wisdom.

Their travel advice falls along the lines of flexibility, utilizing technology and staying in the know. It’s fairly straightforward common sense, but you know what a lot of people forget to pack for when traveling? Common sense. It’s true.

The list and links are provided below. Read More »

Vasquez Rocks – Nature Meets Hollywood

Vasquez Rocks on the San Andreas Fault

Vasquez Rocks on the San Andreas Fault

Vasquez Rocks Park is less than an hour north of Los Angeles, but it feels like it is a world away.  The 745-acre park is located in the Aqua Dulce area which is roughly midway between the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys, respectively.

You may recognize the rock formation from every movie ever made (well, most of them).  It is has also been featured in many television shows.  Among the more notable movies/shows are:

But that’s not all!  In addition to being the home of the Gorn it’s also the site of prehistoric peoples, specifically the Shoshonean and Tataviam.  It was also the hideout of the infamous (more than famous) bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, hence the name.

The park is located on the San Andreas fault line and offers a full day of activities including (from the website) “campfire nature talks, equestrian programs, a junior ranger program, seasonal special events, hiking and horseback riding.  Picnic areas are provided.”

It also boasts a very alert ranger staff and a rapid emergency response time as I can attest from our last visit. Don’t worry, it wasn’t me.

Vasquez Rocks Park is located just off Interstate-5 at 10700 W. Escondido Canyon Rd. in Agua Dulce, CA 91350.  The phone number is (661) 268-0840.

Wear proper footwear and bring lots of water!
