Snoqualmie Falls: Power and Beauty Minutes from Seattle

Snoqualmie Falls Washington

Snoqualmie Falls Washington

If you are from the Seattle area, or will be visiting soon and are looking for a short day trip which provides a taste of Washington’s stunning scenic beauty, along with the option to do some hiking, picknicking, or even have a first class spa and lodging experience, consider a trip to the foothills of the Cascade Mountains to see Washington’s picturesque Snoqualmie Falls.

Snoqualmie Falls, a short 30 minute trip east of Seattle off of Interstate 90, is one of Washington State’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting over one and a half million tourists each year to the picturesque 270 foot high waterfall. On a recent trip to Snoqualmie Falls my wife, son and I spent the afternoon on the grounds alternating our time between a large open grassy space (where we picnicked), walking some family friendly hiking trails, and a covered observation point jutting out over the the canyon which overlooked the raging water careening over the edge of the falls.

The Bottom of Snoqualmie Falls

The Bottom of Snoqualmie Falls

The observation point has a concrete slab and sturdy railing which put us at ease while we allowed our young toddler to take in the sheer power of the falling water without his parents suffering a near heart attack every few minutes.  Many energetic visitors to the falls take advantage of the relatively steep trail to the bottom, where they can visit a powerhouse and watch large turbines generating power then follow a boardwalk which brings them closer to the base of the falls, before having to turn around and make the trip back up to the top.  We opted out of this option with our toddler in tow, but plan on taking him to the bottom as soon as he is big enough to walk most of it himself.

Lastly, If after visiting the falls you decide that the picturesque scenery warrants a longer stay, consider booking a night at the Salish Lodge and Spa uniquely situated right above the falls themselves.  I have not stayed there but I have only heard rave reviews from those I know who have.

All this scenic beauty is just minutes from Downtown Seattle.  If you are here, what are you waiting for?

Mother’s Day Poolside Retreat in Las Vegas

Bask in the sun poolside at Green Valley Ranch Resort & Casino

Bask in the sun poolside at Green Valley Ranch Resort & Casino

Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to treat a special mother to a relaxing vacation. What better place than poolside in Las Vegas. The weather in the City of Sin is perfect during the month of May – not too hot, but definitely not cold. Usually, the sun is shining bright and the champagne, wine and exotic cocktails are flowing under blue skies and palm trees.

Remove yourself from the crowds with a private cabana.

Remove yourself from the crowds with a private cabana.

The best way for Mom to enjoy a Vegas pool, without having to fight amongst the throngs of tourists for a perfectly located lounge chair, is to arrange for a private cabana. Through the concierge desk, most of the resort hotels offer cabanas to hotel guests and visitors for a fee. It’s worth the money to have your very own poolside retreat.

For example, recently my wife and her girlfriends celebrated a special occasion at the beautiful Green Valley Ranch Resort & Casino, a sensational resort located off the Las Vegas Strip. They stayed in one the hotel’s lavish rooms overnight after enjoying the resort’s restaurants and nightlife. The following day, they arranged for a private cabana. It came furnished with a flat-panel HD television and comfortable sofas with pillows, a safe for valuables, and an endless supply of fresh towels. Right outside of the cabana were two lounge chairs situated in front of a private pool overlooking the resort’s crowded pool and spa complex.

The Pond at Green Valley Ranch is a 21 and over sanctuary.

The ladies were served by a waitress that kept food and drinks replenished throughout the entire day as they swam in the refreshing water and basked in the sunlight and cool spring breeze. The cocktails were delicious and the food was spectacular. The great part was that $250 worth of drinks and food were included with the cabana rental. What a great deal!

Later, the ladies invited their families, including the kids to join them at the cabana. So, not only did it providing some relaxing girl time, it made for a great afternoon of family fun.

The cabanas at the Red Rock Resort, Palms, Hard Rock Hotel, The M Resort and Mandalay Bay are great choices too. Their prices and amenities vary. Also, many of the hotels offer an exclusive, enclosed pool area with cabanas for the 21 and over crowd. At Green Valley Ranch it’s The Pond.

Of course, you may want to treat your mother to more than just a day at a cabana. A spa package is a nice way to pamper her as well. You can arrange for a spa treatment, including massage, in the morning and the cabana for the afternoon.

Whatever Las Vegas resort you choose, your special mother is sure to enjoy her time in the Las Vegas sun.

Five Options for Mother’s Day in Arizona

obligatorycactusONE:

The newly renovated Camelback Inn in Scottsdale is holding a Mother’s Day champagne brunch. The Inn’s incredible food is surpassed only by their phenomenal service. Take Mom here for Mother’s Day, and you’ll be raking in the brownie points for YEARS. ($69 per adult, $20 per child)

TWO:

Schedule your mother for a spa weekend at Canyon Ranch in Tucson. Canyon Ranch’s all-inclusive programs are famous for their nourishment of the body, soul, and spirit. Very high end, VERY pricey, but a gift that your mother or wife will never, ever forget. (Rates can be found here.)

THREE:

Take Mom on a day trip to Sedona. It’s just a ninety-minute drive from the Phoenix area, the views are breathtaking, and there are excellent dining and shopping opportunities (I highly recommend a stroll through Tlaquepaque - pronounced Tel-AH-ko-PAH-kee).

bass2082608FOUR:

Get Mom tickets to a cultural event. The Phoenix Symphony’s spring calendar includes “A Salute to Rodgers and Hammerstein”, “Legends and Heroes”, and “007: Bond and Beyond”. The ASU Gammage Auditorium is featuring numerous performances over the next several months, including “Stomp!”, “Rent”, and “A Chorus Line”.

FIVE:

For the Rockin’ Mom, Cricket Pavilion is gearing up its summer concert series. Among many other performers and bands, Jimmy Buffet will be performing on 5/14, No Doubt is holding a show on 5/23, Aerosmith is landing on 7/27, and Def Leppard (with Poison! and Cheap Trick!) is performing on 8/29. I recommend the lawn tickets, which are generally only around $20, and you can kick back on a blanket and gaze at the stars overhead.

What I’m getting at is, don’t just get Mom the same old flowers, candies, and dinner. Kick it up a little and truly surprise her! Trust me, you’ll get all the value in the world out of your thoughtfulness.

In 2008, more than 6,000 wine connoisseurs and novices converged at the Grand Tasting and enjoyed 2,900 bottles of wine from more than 750 wineries and 125 suppliers. The second night of UNLVino, “Auss-Some and Then Some,” will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday April 17, at the District at Green Valley Ranch, an upscale outdoor shopping, eating and entertainment venue located just minutes east of the Las Vegas Strip off Interstate 215 at Green Valley Parkway. The M Resort: Las Vegas’ Newest Vacation Destination

The M resort features progressive architectural style and design

The M resort features progressive architectural style and design

In Las Vegas, resort builders are always pushing the envelope to create something new and exciting for the millions of tourists that visit the city each year. Rising from the desert floor on the far southern edge of the Valley, Las Vegas’ newest vacation destination, the M Resort, is no exception. As a matter of fact, with a view of it from my front yard, I’d call it immaculate example of cutting-edge architecture and design. It’s simply spectacular.

Scheduled to open on March 1 at Las Vegas Boulevard South at St. Rose Parkway, the 390-room M Resort is the first property travelers along I-15 from California now see. Its location also places the resort 400 feet higher than any other Las Vegas resort property, offering guests sweeping views of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip from the majority of its guest rooms and restaurants, many of which feature outdoor terraces overlooking its 100,000 square foot pool and events piazza as well as the Las Vegas Valley.

Here’s some the M Resort’s other great amenities:

  • A truly one-of-a-kind design, the M Resort does not feature reflective glass like many of the areas resorts. Instead, it includes skylights on the casino floor allowing natural light in – a rare feature in the casino industry. The architecture is progressive in style, incorporating horizontal lines, natural lighting and a rich color palette of natural materials. It’s definitely not your run of the mill cheesy theme resort.
  • Oversized guest rooms and suites ranging from 550 to 2,400 square feet. More than 70 percent of the rooms at the M Resort offer views of the Las Vegas Strip through floor to ceiling windows.

The M Resort features 351 guest rooms and 39 suites.

The M Resort features 351 guest rooms and 39 suites.

  • Guest rooms equipped with high-technology amenities including Bose Wave sound system, iPod docking station and 42” HD LCD flat screen television. There’s also inlaid mirror television in the bathroom. Now that’s cool.
  • Wireless internet connectivity throughout the entire resort, allowing guests to access wireless voice and data services, mobile phones, BlackBerry devices, PDAs and laptops.
  • More than 92,000 square feet of gaming excitement, including 1,900 video poker and slot machines, 64 game tables, high limit area, live action poker room, race and sports book and poolside gaming.
  • Nearly 30,000 square feet of kitchen and culinary work areas dedicated to the culinary arts. The resort will own and operate all of its nine restaurants and five destination bars, which feature the next-generation dining experience with unique culinary concepts and innovative social dining atmospheres.
  • A buffet featuring a live action cooking studio – the first of its kind. The studio will engage diners providing them with ringside seats to cooking demonstrations and broadcasts. Perhaps it’ll feel like you’re in the Iron Chef Kitchen Stadium on Food Network.
  • A 23,000 square foot, world-class spa, salon and fitness center will offer 16 treatment rooms, sauna, steam and hot tub wet areas and a state-of-the-art fitness center.

The 100,000 square foot pool overlooks the Las Vegas Valley.

The 100,000 square foot pool overlooks the Las Vegas Valley.

  • An on-site gas station and M Pharmacy provide unique amenities for locals and tourists.

So what’s nearby to enjoy during your vacation at the M Resort?

If you enjoy shopping, you can travel 30 minutes south on I-15 to the Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas on the California state line in Primm or just minutes north on Las Vegas Boulevard to the Las Vegas Outlet Center.

You can also tee up for a round of golf at the nearby Rio Secco Golf Club in Seven Hills, located just a few minutes east off of St. Rose Parkway. Or you can try the Bali Hai Golf Course, located adjacent to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Take a scenic drive through the loop at Red Rock Canyon. Take I-15 north to Blue Diamond and head west. If you’re into adventure, take a hike on one of the canyon’s many trails.

Whatever you’re in the mood to do during your next Las Vegas vacation, you’re sure to find it.

The M Resort is now taking reservations, so check it out.
