Who Lives in a Pineapple Next to the Street?

This pineapple hut near Phuket, Thailand must belong to a relative of SpongBob SquarePants. Don’t make me explain that to you.

Patrick’s relatives were not available for comment.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about move on to the next post.

Shangri-La is in Prospect Hill, NC

Today’s roadside attraction finds us in North Carolina just outside of Prospect Hill. Meet Shangri-La, a small stone village, population none, along the highway.

The town was created between 1968 and 1977 by Henry L. Warren. The buildings are pretty small, but the detail is impressive.

A sign out front reads, “Let me live n a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.” That’s a touching sentiment, but I’ve lived by the side of the road and it isn’t all hugs and handshakes.

Shangri-La Stone Village is on Old NC-86 between Prospect Hill and Hightowers.

I Like Big Buds and I Cannot Lie…

This is Sparta! Sparta, Wisconsin, but hey, big beer bottles!

These giant bottles of Budweiser may be alongside the road, but that doesn’t mean they are encouraging you to drink and drive. However, it is okay to look longingly.

In a Pickle (Barrel)

Cracker Barrels are a dime a dozen, what with the porch swings and the deep-fried everything, but a Pickle Barrel? That’s a house of a different color. Oh yeah, it’s also a house.

Well, it used to be a house on the shores of Sable Lake outside of Chicago. Now it sits in Grand Marais, Michigan as a tourist information center — probably the only one listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

No pickles were harmed in the writing of this post.
