Sleeping Beauty's Winter Castle
If you’ve never been to Disneyland during the winter holiday season, allow me to submit that a visit to the park at this time will cure your “been there, done that” blues. The enormous Christmas tree, the holiday music piped in, the lights over Main Street USA, the LED icicle-draped Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle at the center of the park – all conspire to melt the heart of the Scroogiest among us.
I’ve been to the park twice in just a few months, after a very very long spell of not ever visiting at all. My first visit was on my birthday, a Wednesday in September that, besides being my birthday, was just another day in the life of the happiest place on Earth. Since it was my two young sons’ first time there, I looked at everything with a critical travel blogger’s eye. We all had a great time, but for the ticket price of $72 for adults and $62 for children, I expected perfection and that is not what I found. Read More »

Let the Celebrations Begin!
Summer is officially full on! June is quickly becoming a memory (it’s been two whole days now) and it’s time to turn focus to July. July is a special month for us as a nation for in this month we celebrate one of the most significant events in our short history. My birthday!
Some like to think that the parades and fireworks displays, backyard barbecues, cookouts and community gatherings centered around the July 4th weekend are in celebration of our nation’s independence. Whatever helps you sleep at night, friends. That stuff is for me!
Actually, it’s not. My special day isn’t until the 10th. Fact is, Read More »

A very patriotic ice skater
North Idaho’s Silverwood Theme Park, located on Hwy 95 between Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint, is the Pacific Northwest’s largest amusement park. Each 4th of July, they feature a fireworks extravaganza to light up the sky. That’s after a day of train rides, rollercoasters, water slides, and a very colorful ice show featuring a cast of champion caliber skaters.

Boston Pops and Fourth of JUly
If you find yourself in Boston for the Fourth of July weekend, it is incumbent upon you to take in the spectacular yearly celebration at The Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. Founded in 1974 by Boston-area businessman and philanthropist, David Mugar, the event was designed to breathe new life into the dying Esplanade concert series. Mugar approached famed Boston Pops conductor, Arthur Fiedler, and suggested that the Pops perform Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with “a few added extras.” Howitzer cannons, church bells and fireworks were added to the concert “so that, in Arthur Fiedler’s own words, “All hell could break loose.”"
Now in its 36th year, the performance and fireworks welcome over 500,000 visitors from around the world and another seven million+ who view an hour-long special on CBS. This year, Grammy-award winning singer, Neil Diamond will perform some of his hits with the Boston Pops and, for the third year in a row, the live broadcast will be hosted by late night television host, Craig Ferguson.
