Disney’s Star Tours 2.0 Opening!

This is the droid you were looking for.

Star Tours, the popular Star Wars ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World, will be opening version 2.0 today (May 20, 2011). It is also opening day for the 2011 Star Wars Weekends held in the park, which means it will be crazy crowded, but still fun.

Rumor has it that the new Star Tours ride is in 3D, features multiple destinations and numerous characters spanning all of the Star Wars films. Yes, even Jar Jar. (Check out this new Star Tours commercial via our friends at The Disney Blog.)

The Disneyland ride will reopen on June 3, 2011. They don’t have Star Wars Weekends at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, which is bunk, but expect the park to still be insanely busy for the 2.0 launch.

Nantucket Family Vacation – Part 2

The Exterior of the Brotherhood of Thieves

Read part one of our Nantucket vacation here.

After our visit to the Nantucket Whaling Museum, we had to take a break in our hotel residence. We were still very full from breakfast, so we just had some snacks in our room and rested a bit before getting ready to go out again.

My kids, upon hearing about Children’s Beach, were eager to visit all morning, so we ended their wait by walking over, just across the street from the White Elephant Hotel Residences. I’m sure that in the summer, this is the perfect place for kids, as the name suggests, because of the calmness of the water. While May is definitely too cold to go in the water, the kids enjoyed dipping their toes, and playing on the climbing structure and swing set.

Our next stop was to the Juice Bar ice cream shop, which was billed to us as a must-do – something that the long line out the door confirmed. I’d have to agree that it is something you can’t miss whenever visiting Nantucket.

To relax a bit before dinner, we visited the Weezie Library for Children at the Nantucket Athenaeum, and read a few books to the kids. Then we got ready for dinner, which was at the Brant Point Grill White Elephant Hotel, and was absolutely amazing.

The next morning, we had a light breakfast, and went for a nice walk around to the shops, before having lunch at the Brotherhood of Thieves, a pub-style restaurant by the Whaling Museum. The burgers were excellent (and very filling), and the lobster bisque was loaded with whole pieces of lobster.

Finally, we got ready to leave – boarding the late afternoon ferry on Sunday afternoon, back to the mainland. The spring (before the crowds arrived for summer) was really a wonderful time to visit Nantucket, and we can’t wait to return.

Disclosure: The White Elephant Hotel Residences provided us with a complimentary two-night stay, as well as dinner at the Brant Point Grill (excluding alcohol).

Hawaiian Monk Seal

Kauai offers a host of unusual sights to witness, from soaring cliffs to cascading waterfalls. One of the best sights to spy is the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. Endemic to Hawaii and the only tropical seal in the world,  these cuddly creatures can be spotted lolling around Kaua’i beaches.  One of the most endangered mammals in the world, there are only about 1100 left so time spent watching for Hawaiian Monk Seals is an experience you’ll never have anywhere outside of Hawaii.
