Drive just a little west of  San Antonio, Texas, and you’ll find yourself in Boerne, Texas, a quaint little town that has recently had a boom in growth that has attracted folks from more than just the San Antonio area. Typical of a small Texas Hill-Country town, Boerne has many antique shops, BBQ restaurants and Bed and Breakfasts with warm Texas hospitality. Smack dab in the middle of all this cuteness is the Dodging Duck Brewhaus.

Although I have been to Boerne many a time, I had yet to visit the brewpub. It took a recent encounter with owner and brewer Keith Moore to remind me my visit was long over due. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon recently, I decided to head on out. The Dodging Duck is located on River Road in Boerne, so as the name implies, it is right off the river, known to the locals as Cibolo Creek. A little navigation from the GPS and soon the gorgeous scenery of Cibolo Creek, complete with a few ducks swimming around,  greeted me as I pulled in.

What I walked into was a place filled with a quaint country lake house interior that was very warm and inviting, making me feel instantly felt at home. As I moved around looking for a place to sit, I passed one of several private rooms uniquely decorated, with what appears to be plenty of room for guests. Right nearby the dining room was a beautiful wood and brass wrap around bar that just screamed good times.

I settled in at the bar and was quickly greeted by Karen, who from what I could tell runs the show. She was gracious and knowledgeable and quickly assisted me in getting to know the Dodging Duck.  She explained the that typically have four to five beers on tap, with seasonal brews coming out throughout the year.

Wanting to try them all, I settled on a flight, which is a sampling of each beer. What’s great about this place is that they role with their duck theme, from their motto “Carpe Anatem, Seize The Duck’ to the names of their beers. I knew The Duck would be a good time.

What was on tap at the moment was their: The Duck King Good India Pale Ale, a lightly golden IPA with Columbus and Simcoe Hops; Sir Francis Drake Vanilla Porter, a Robust Porter taste o chocolate and vanilla; Lonesome Duck Pale Ale, an American style Pale Ale; and the Quackinator Doppelbock, a German lager that originated in the 18th Century.

I had a great time and this place should be a must stop whether your just passing through, or visiting Boerne and staying one of the several Bed and Breakfasts such as the Paniolo Ranch B&B.
