By now most of us have watched the new Discovery channel series Brewmasters, or at least seen the ads. The seven-part series features Delaware brewery Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and its enigmatic founder, Sam Calagione. The first episode starts out with Sony records asking Sam and Dogfish Head to come up with a beer for the re-release of the classic Jazz fusion album ‘Bitches Brew’ by Miles Davis.

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery began in 1995 as a Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats, a brewpub in Rebohoth Beach, Delaware. It was the first brewpub opened in Delaware and quickly took off and prompting Dogfish Head to open a much larger production facility in nearby Milton, Delaware. The area is just beautiful and the brewpub fits into the local vibe of Rebohoth with its classic wood finished interior, photos on the wall and of course brewing memorabilia.
The brewpub, Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats, remains the location where much of their experimentation with brewing goes on, allowing Dogfish Head to remain true to its roots while still being able to produce on a larger scale to meet the demands of the country’s beer geeks. It’s also where you can always find ‘something interesting on tap’. For example a while back, only visitors to the restaurant were able to try pints of Dogfish’s chicha beer, do to the methods needed to brew this South and Central American corn beer.

This is indeed what is great about Dogfish Head in general. Not only are they not afraid to try anything, it’s also their mission statement to create ‘off-centered ales for off centered people’. Since opening, they have brewed more than 200 different types of beer. Visit the Rebohoth Beach brewpub and you have a better than average shot at trying stuff they have concocted that most of will never see!
While enjoying finely crafted ales there, you will also be treated to live music most Friday and Saturday nights. I hear that Dogfish Head’s own ‘Pain Killaz’ have even graced the stage and if you watched the Brewmasters premier, they have quite the phat beat! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist).
While off-centered ales are the focus, the brewpub is also well know for its off-centered food as well. Grillin’ up steaks, seafood, wood-fired pizzas, fantastic deserts. You will often find that some of the dishes feature their beers as an ingredient, such as their Punk-in Ale Soup. Sounds great, but I would love to try their Antelope Sausage Sandwich Wood grilled and topped with Homemade Sauerkraut on a fresh Baguette with Fresh Cut Fries. Coming by with your little ones? No worries, there is even a menu just for them.
So if a trip to the Northeast part of the United States is in your future, a stop in Milton and Rebohoth Beach, Delaware is a must for you!
