My family is really more of a warm weather vacation family. We love to visit theme parks, beaches, and outdoor pools, but don’t ski or do other outdoor activities. So, when the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council recently invited my family to visit the area in the winter, I was a bit skeptical. Would we be able to find enough activities to keep us entertained? Luckily, we were set up with numerous activities – all appropriate for my 4 and 6 year olds.
Our trip started on December 26th, the day a blizzard was set to hit Boston. We left home early, avoided the storm, and made it to our hotel, the Holiday Inn Turf in Lake George, by noon.
To be honest, we were surprised to see how quiet Lake George Village was. Since it’s really more of a summer destination, many of the local restaurants and shops were closed. However, we headed toward the nearby town of Queensbury, NY, where there were plenty of restaurants open for lunch. We chose the Log Jam Restaurant, and enjoyed a nice lunch.
On our first full day, we had day passes to White Water Bay, the indoor water park at the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge. My kids, especially my six-year old daughter, loved it there, and didn’t want to leave when it was time to go. I’ll definitely want to stay at the Lodge on my next trip to Lake George. The Lodge also has an on-site Johnny Rockets, where we ate lunch before heading back to our hotel.
Day one was definitely a success, and we went to sleep looking forward to our ski lessons the next day at Gore Mountain.
