I’m not talking Smokey.

Big Bear Lake, CA

You’ve heard by now that the economic downturn has affected travel in a big way.  People are sticking closer to home for their vacations or not going on vacation at all.  If you have a little bit of money set aside, however, this turn of events means your dollar will go a long way.

In the Big Bear Lake resort area just a few hours east of Los Angeles by car, cabin rentals have dropped this season, making rentals cheaper according to an article in the Los Angeles Times.  I just did a quick search and found a cute cabin near the lake for $1100 for six nights that’s big enough for our family of four.  Cabin rental companies are clamoring for your business – Big Bear Lake Resort Association is even giving away free Visa gift cards when you book any lodging through them.  For a romantic getaway, try Gold Mountain Manor, a bed and breakfast in the forest.  Some companies even offer package deals when you rent a cabin and book your outdoor adventures with them.

Since the lake area is so close it’s a perfect destination for a weekend getaway.  The opportunites for adventure on or near the lake itself prove that Big Bear isn’t just about snow.  You can get your bearings with a tour on Miss Liberty – a paddlewheel boat that takes you around the lake for 1.5 hour tour (that’s half the danger).  Tour originates at Pine Knot Marina, with free shuttle service from Big Bear Lake Village.  Call 909-866-8129 for reservations.  The marina also rents out boats and kayaks for your watersports pleasure.
A helpful guide to the right activities for your family in Big Bear is the Discovery Center. Check it out online or visit in person on your way into the area – the site has helpful information about local forest trails and activities and when you need a permit.  Big Bear Lake is a blog by Daniel Pea that give you first-hand accounts of the author’s experiences and beautiful photos from his mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, and other outdoor excursions.
My favorite – an inviting trail
As usual, I don’t have suggestions about where to eat, because with two children under 5 my goal when entering a restaurant is to get in, eat, and get out.  I barely remember half the places we’ve been to.  Luckily, UpTake is a virtual font of information.  Did you know that we’re not just a blog?  We’re All Things Travel – look, here’s what you find when you search for restaurants in Big Bear Lake, CA.  I know!  Go ahead, add us to your feed reader.  Click that little button below.  You’ll be happy you did it.
