Wells Beach, Maine
The Amtrak Downeaster Rail begins in Portland, Maine and ends in Boston, Massachusetts. In between there are stops in Old Orchard Beach ME, Saco ME, Wells ME, Dover NH, Durham NH, Exeter NH, Haverhill MA, and Woburn MA. For this series of articles I will expound upon the merits of each stop along the Downeaster Amtrak tour.
Wells is the southern-most Amtrak stop in Maine, before heading into New Hampshire. The Amtrak station in Wells is serviced by taxis and an in-season trolley service. Patrons can use these modes of transportation to head to the coast to enjoy the truly stunning Wells Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm Farm, and the equally beatific Rachel Carson National Wildlife Preserve.
Wells Beach, Maine
The Wells Chamber of Commerce is an excellent resource to discover local dining, bed and breakfasts, shopping, and recreation. Choose from Wells Beach, Crescent Beach, or Drake’s Island Beach if you’re in the mood to enjoy the ocean. Rent canoes or kayaks from Wells Harbor, or pick up a branch of the Eastern Trail Alliance Bicycle Trail. Enjoy a sunny summer day in the outdoors, and when you’re tired relax with a lobster roll and a beer at Billy’s Chowder House, right on the water.
Then hop back on the Amtrak train and continue your adventure!
