Did you head to Daytona Beach with little more than your swimsuit and sunscreen? That’s all well and good when it’s hot and the Atlantic Ocean offers the perfect respite from the Florida humidity. But what about when you unpack your bags and find that it’s too dang cold to take off your shoes, much less your clothes?
Have no fear, your day in the beach town can be saved and it doesn’t have to cost you any more than you’d have spent to lounge on the sand!
3 Free and Cheap Things To Do in Daytona Beach When It’s Cold Outside
1. Park on the beach and go for a walk. You came this far, you might as well have a little beach experience. The good news is that it’s free to drive and park on the beach during the off-season. Our family recommends accessing the beach from the end of International Speedway Blvd and taking a short stroll to the north (away from the driveable portion) to Ocean Deck Restaurant. This is a great place to have lunch while enjoying the ocean view.
2. Visit the chocolate factory. It’s not quite Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but Angell and Phelp’s Chocolate Factory does offer a peek inside their chocolate-making business. You’ll get about a half an hour lesson in chocolate, including how it’s made and where the best chocolate comes from. At the end of the free tour, enjoy free samples of Angell and Phelp’s chocolate! The staff here is incredibly kind and generous, making this an excellent place to take kids.
3. Stop into the Southeast Museum of Photography. This tiny museum on the Daytona State College campus only offers a couple of exhibits at a time. However, if you’re a photography lover this is a great place to spend an hour or so – and it’s free!
If you’re looking for a little more excitement in Daytona Beach and you’re willing to spend more, Daytona Lagoon is another fun spot for cold-weather entertainment.
