Baseball Spring Training Family Vacationing in Arizona

Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale

As a Boston Red Sox fan and season ticket holder, spring training is always a welcome time.  It’s the beginning of the new season, with all of the eternal optimism that comes with a clean slate.  It’s also (usually) the end of our painful winter.  While I’ve never attended Red Sox spring training, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do.

This year, as part of the Greater Phoenix media trip that I recently attended, I had the opportunity to see three different Cactus League games at three very different stadiums.  Despite the fact that our home team trains in Florida, I plan on taking the whole family to Phoenix next year for spring training.  I loved it that much.

Puka Dog and Hula in Kaua’i

The Puka Dog Menu

When you visit Kaua’i ,there are certain activities that you must experience.  I will cover most of them in later posts but two that you are sure to hear about are hula and Puka Dog. When I say hula, I don’t mean the grass skirt stereotype most Americans expect. I mean authentic hula, which can be performed in many different ways, with many different adornments.  As for Puka Dog, I mean the authentic Hawaiian version of a hot dog.

Three More Things I Learned While Traveling

Big Lake, Arizona

Big Lake, Arizona

Continuing where I left off

Four – The folks who live in the places where you visit and vacation want you to love their home town. So, while travel guides and vacation packets from the local tourism bureau are all well and good, make sure that you ask around for the best things to see, places to stay, restaurants, clubs, shops, and the like. For example, my husband and I never would have experienced the Snake River Brewing Company in Jackson, Wyoming (and THE BEST wild game chili I have ever had IN MY LIFE), had we not asked a waitress to tell us where the locals like to hang out.

A Bridge in London

As seen in Peter Pan (Disney version)

This is a bridge in London (Tower Bridge), but not the London Bridge. It’s a common mistake. The actual London Bridge fell down (brick by brick) and now resides in the United States. Do you know where it is? Hint: It’s a bit drier than England.

If you guessed Arizona then you are correct. If you guessed Texas, Oklahoma or Seattle, WA, then you would be wrong.

While the London Bridge gets all of the attention from the preschool set, it should be noted that the Tower Bridge has been in a lot more movies over the past decade. So take that, London Bridge.

Also, what does the London Bridge have to do with My Fair Lady? I’ve seen that musical a few times and they don’t even mention Arizona.

This is a Wordless Wednesday entry, but you’d never know it.
