A Harlem brownstone

A Harlem brownstone

Dig into an enticing array of gastric delights during the Taste of Harlem Food and Cultural tour.  There’s no more memorable way to experience New York than to eat your way through it and this tour provides a detailed exploration of Harlem eateries.  The three hour tour features six restaurants, a historic bed and breakfast, shops and landmarks that reflect Harlem’s storied history. The tour kicks off at Amy Ruth’s, the legendary southern-style restaurant where guests are treated to fluffy biscuits and buttermilk-battered chicken wings while classic R&B music plays in the background.

Guided by owner Jacqueline Orange, Taste of Harlem also includes lively history lessons and Harlem cultural facts. Guests will take in the stunning view atop Terrace in the Sky, a fine dining spot and also indulge in Dominican food highlights like rabo (oxtail stew) and arroz amarillo( yellow rice).  Participants  visit chic shoe boutique Head Over Heels and the famed Apollo Theater, where I grabbed the chance to hear Mr. Apollo himself  recall Apollo greats Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye.  You ride a bus for half of the tour, crusing  by the stately brownstones of Sugar Hill, where Thurgood Marshall and Paul Robeson once made their homes.  My tour ended at the divine Mr. Lee Lee’s Bakery, where I indulged in rugelach made in heaven.  Although each restaurant visit only samples of their cuisine, the portions are generous and I was bursting with food and Harlem history when I finished.  It makes a great excursion for a New York weekend getaway.  Check out 102 Brownstone boutique hotel for a relaxed stay with private Jacuzzis.
