5 Reasons Not To Go To Disney World On Your Summer Vacation
If the Orlando tourism people ask, you didn’t hear this from me.
I’m pretty sure I could have my Florida driver’s license revoked for what I’m about to tell you.
*deep breath*
Disney World sucks in the summer.
It’s true. Tell a Florida resident that you’re planning to visit Disney World in June, July or August and you’ll be met with a look of confusion and pity. And possibly a little smugness because clearly you are not as “in the know” as the locals are.
Yes, we know, it’s the happiest place on earth. From October to April, many of us wholeheartedly agree that Disney World rocks. We’re iffy on September and May, but we’ll let those months slide. But a visit to Disney World during the height of summer?
No way.
5 Reasons Why Disney World Sucks (In The Summer)
1. The heat.
I love warm weather. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons I moved to Florida in the first place. I can even tolerate the 100+ degree heat that is prevalent all summer long. What I cannot tolerate is 100+ degree heat in the middle of miles and miles of concrete, with precious few shaded areas as big as my thumb. The air is heavy and sticky and hot and the misting fans do very little to relieve the oppressive heat.
2. The lines.
Despite the fact that the summer season provides the worst climate for enjoying Disney World, tourists from all over the world still visit in droves all summer long. Plan to wait 45 minutes for everything – from a hot dog to a character meeting – on almost any summer day. If you’ve got your heart set on hitting one of the more popular rides, you could spend hours waiting for your turn.
But, hey – what little kid doesn’t love standing in line for hours, right?
3. The crowds.
Forget the lines. Try walking to a bathroom. Or getting through the front gate. The sheer volume of people milling around Disney World during the summer makes simple navigation agonizing. You’ll spend your entire day shoulder to shoulder with strangers and strollers.
4. The cost.
Sure, Disney World is always expensive. If you’re planning a trip to Disney World you’re already prepared to shell out lots and lots of cash. But if you’re traveling in the summer, be prepared to pay a premium for everything. The best deals on everything from park admission to Disney hotels are usually found during the fall and winter months.
5. Thunderstorms. Oh, and hurricanes.
Summer is Florida’s rainy season. It is also hurricane season. Chances are very good that at least one part of your vacation will be rained out by an afternoon shower – if not completely ruined by high winds and federal evacuations.
Now, none of these things seem that bad – on their own. But add it all up and you have a recipe for hot, tired, crabby kids (and adults), spending hours on end standing in line and crammed up against thousands of other hot, tired, crabby kids (and adults). OOH! That sounds like fun!
Or not.
If you’re dying to visit Disney World (and truly, I actually like Disney World), consider visiting in October when the weather has cooled and the crowds have thinned considerably.
If you absolutely must visit Florida in the summer, check out the beaches where you can get relief from the heat with a coastal breeze and water. Or skip Disney World and head to Universal Studios. Yes, it’s still hot, but Universal Studios offers an Express Pass ticket upgrade that allows you to skip the lines for every single ride, all day long. Eliminating the long lines makes the entire amusement park experience much more enjoyable.

not to mention the fact that Disney is ridiculously overrated, overpriced and overexposed.
I don’t know. We’ve been to Disney in August before, and it was no more hot or humid than CT gets in August. As for the lines, as long as you do some prep work and have a plan, you can hit most of your “must sees” during your trip. As for the rainy season, this year we were there in May the week Orlando got a FOOT of rain.
But hey, we like Disney so much we bought into their Vacation Club.
I think Natalie needs a vacation.
We were there in August one year and it was awesome. It did rain a lot, but that was actually pretty refreshing. Of course we didn’t have kids at the time which I’m sure would have made the experience quite a bit different.

You are an idiot. The tourism industry is rock bottom right now, and here you are trying to pour fuel on the fire. The fact they laid off 1900 employees doesn’t matter to your uneducated, non-thinking ass. You want to give potenital tourists ANOTHER reason not to travel to Orlando. Not to spend money in this city, not to keep hotels operating and park attendants employed. You’re an asshole, you have no idea what you’re talking about, and hopefully, no one really gives a shit about your pathetic, washed-up, no news, boring, thoughless rants about anything. You’re an idiot.
Personally I think you are going to come across most of those problems any time of the year, but the experience at Disney World is great regardless.
I just got back from my second Disneyworld trip in 2 years, it will be my last. We had fun but this last trip has left me quite bitter about the whole experience. The most pleasurable experiences we had were dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s and the Cirque du Soleil show “La Nouba”. Not Disney related. Yes we expected long lines and we made use of the fast pass as much as possible. But when there are so many people in the parks that fast passes are expired before 1 in the afternoon for the more popular rides and you have to stand in line for 45 minutes when you DO have a fast pass that is ridiculous. What a waste of time. Not to mention the rudeness that comes out in people at Disneyworld!!! Unbelievable. Maybe some of you have a higher tolerance for that, but I do not. Walt Disney is probably rolling in his grave at what is happening in his parks….
I also cannot even believe the parents I saw dragging there poor young children around, exhausted and crying at 10 and 11 at night, For what? The whole thing was a joke.
Not to mention that every fat person on earth was there because of the free dining plan. Never again!!! People do not take you kids to Disneyworld!!! Spend your money more wisely on a vacation anywhere else but there.
Disney is monumentally over-rated–read Natalie’s post, above. Unless your money grows on trees, you have many superior choices in Florida.
Disney sucks in October too!
Suppose to be their “so-called” slow season.
Nothing but lines, crowds and marketing ploys.
Customer service is as fake as all the parks around you.
We are staying at Port Orleans resort, mold is in our bathrooms, the rooms sucks and you ride busy public transit to visit any of the parks….other than that I guess you can take a taxi.
Prices are outrageous, the meal plan sounds good, but then you pay an “optional” 20% gratuity on all your meals, not too mention $6 – $10.95 for any alcoholic beverage.
Weather is decent though, so we have rented a car and are hitting the coast.
Too bad we spent a lot of money on the package and have only used it for 3 days.
