If the Orlando tourism people ask, you didn’t hear this from me.
I’m pretty sure I could have my Florida driver’s license revoked for what I’m about to tell you.
*deep breath*
Disney World sucks in the summer.
It’s true. Tell a Florida resident that you’re planning to visit Disney World in June, July or August and you’ll be met with a look of confusion and pity. And possibly a little smugness because clearly you are not as “in the know” as the locals are.
Yes, we know, it’s the happiest place on earth. From October to April, many of us wholeheartedly agree that Disney World rocks. We’re iffy on September and May, but we’ll let those months slide. But a visit to Disney World during the height of summer?
No way.
5 Reasons Why Disney World Sucks (In The Summer)
1. The heat.
I love warm weather. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons I moved to Florida in the first place. I can even tolerate the 100+ degree heat that is prevalent all summer long. What I cannot tolerate is 100+ degree heat in the middle of miles and miles of concrete, with precious few shaded areas as big as my thumb. The air is heavy and sticky and hot and the misting fans do very little to relieve the oppressive heat.
2. The lines.
Despite the fact that the summer season provides the worst climate for enjoying Disney World, tourists from all over the world still visit in droves all summer long. Plan to wait 45 minutes for everything – from a hot dog to a character meeting – on almost any summer day. If you’ve got your heart set on hitting one of the more popular rides, you could spend hours waiting for your turn.
But, hey – what little kid doesn’t love standing in line for hours, right?
3. The crowds.
Forget the lines. Try walking to a bathroom. Or getting through the front gate. The sheer volume of people milling around Disney World during the summer makes simple navigation agonizing. You’ll spend your entire day shoulder to shoulder with strangers and strollers.
4. The cost.
Sure, Disney World is always expensive. If you’re planning a trip to Disney World you’re already prepared to shell out lots and lots of cash. But if you’re traveling in the summer, be prepared to pay a premium for everything. The best deals on everything from park admission to Disney hotels are usually found during the fall and winter months.
5. Thunderstorms. Oh, and hurricanes.
Summer is Florida’s rainy season. It is also hurricane season. Chances are very good that at least one part of your vacation will be rained out by an afternoon shower – if not completely ruined by high winds and federal evacuations.
Now, none of these things seem that bad – on their own. But add it all up and you have a recipe for hot, tired, crabby kids (and adults), spending hours on end standing in line and crammed up against thousands of other hot, tired, crabby kids (and adults). OOH! That sounds like fun!
Or not.
If you’re dying to visit Disney World (and truly, I actually like Disney World), consider visiting in October when the weather has cooled and the crowds have thinned considerably.
If you absolutely must visit Florida in the summer, check out the beaches where you can get relief from the heat with a coastal breeze and water. Or skip Disney World and head to Universal Studios. Yes, it’s still hot, but Universal Studios offers an Express Pass ticket upgrade that allows you to skip the lines for every single ride, all day long. Eliminating the long lines makes the entire amusement park experience much more enjoyable.

not to mention the fact that Disney is ridiculously overrated, overpriced and overexposed.
I don’t know. We’ve been to Disney in August before, and it was no more hot or humid than CT gets in August. As for the lines, as long as you do some prep work and have a plan, you can hit most of your “must sees” during your trip. As for the rainy season, this year we were there in May the week Orlando got a FOOT of rain.
But hey, we like Disney so much we bought into their Vacation Club.
I think Natalie needs a vacation.
We were there in August one year and it was awesome. It did rain a lot, but that was actually pretty refreshing. Of course we didn’t have kids at the time which I’m sure would have made the experience quite a bit different.

You are an idiot. The tourism industry is rock bottom right now, and here you are trying to pour fuel on the fire. The fact they laid off 1900 employees doesn’t matter to your uneducated, non-thinking ass. You want to give potenital tourists ANOTHER reason not to travel to Orlando. Not to spend money in this city, not to keep hotels operating and park attendants employed. You’re an asshole, you have no idea what you’re talking about, and hopefully, no one really gives a shit about your pathetic, washed-up, no news, boring, thoughless rants about anything. You’re an idiot.
Personally I think you are going to come across most of those problems any time of the year, but the experience at Disney World is great regardless.
I just got back from my second Disneyworld trip in 2 years, it will be my last. We had fun but this last trip has left me quite bitter about the whole experience. The most pleasurable experiences we had were dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s and the Cirque du Soleil show “La Nouba”. Not Disney related. Yes we expected long lines and we made use of the fast pass as much as possible. But when there are so many people in the parks that fast passes are expired before 1 in the afternoon for the more popular rides and you have to stand in line for 45 minutes when you DO have a fast pass that is ridiculous. What a waste of time. Not to mention the rudeness that comes out in people at Disneyworld!!! Unbelievable. Maybe some of you have a higher tolerance for that, but I do not. Walt Disney is probably rolling in his grave at what is happening in his parks….
I also cannot even believe the parents I saw dragging there poor young children around, exhausted and crying at 10 and 11 at night, For what? The whole thing was a joke.
Not to mention that every fat person on earth was there because of the free dining plan. Never again!!! People do not take you kids to Disneyworld!!! Spend your money more wisely on a vacation anywhere else but there.
Disney is monumentally over-rated–read Natalie’s post, above. Unless your money grows on trees, you have many superior choices in Florida.
Disney sucks in October too!
Suppose to be their “so-called” slow season.
Nothing but lines, crowds and marketing ploys.
Customer service is as fake as all the parks around you.
We are staying at Port Orleans resort, mold is in our bathrooms, the rooms sucks and you ride busy public transit to visit any of the parks….other than that I guess you can take a taxi.
Prices are outrageous, the meal plan sounds good, but then you pay an “optional” 20% gratuity on all your meals, not too mention $6 – $10.95 for any alcoholic beverage.
Weather is decent though, so we have rented a car and are hitting the coast.
Too bad we spent a lot of money on the package and have only used it for 3 days.

My family had their 1st and last trip to Disney last week. The staff was incredibly rude!! I mean RUDE RUDE and RUDE!! Three of the security officers yelled at our entire family for going the wrong way at the gate. I mean to the point my kids were crying and truly scared. They said their worst day on vacation in Flordia was the day at Disney (How sad is that). For over $700 ++++ dollars, I can think of better things to do with my children We will NEVER go back. Waste of time and money!!

I agree with you, mate! Walt Disney World is malarkey in the summer – not only we have to deal with out-of-state folks, but we have to deal with what I call turismos! They’re the groups of teens in uniform shirts and/or bags who are guided with adults with flags and hail from Brazil or Argentina (respectively as Brazilian tour groups and Argentinean youth herds). Their chanting can set anyone off, and to some child with autism, they can induce many a meltdown! (If you want more information on them, see my Hub, “Turismos: Tour Groups of Central Florida.”)
You Guys are retarted!! Ive been to disney world 3 times, and it was amazing everytime, i just went for 2 weeks and it was amazing! You guys just dont know what your doing..
I have to agree, I think Disneyworld is incredible, no other place on earth has so many attractions and new entertainment not seen anywhere else. I mean seriously if you can’t be happy at Disney World then you have some serious issues, take a refresher course on how to have fun, cmon people.
I’m at Disney World with my family right now and it’s August. Yes, we got drenched our first day but surprisingly the wait times for rides haven’t been more than 20 minutes.
Maybe it’s the recession, but the crowds are the thinnest I’ve ever seen and we’ve been traveling to Disney on and off in August for years. The changes to the dining plan are horrible though. The kids menu is so limited that after their 3rd quick serve my kids started whining about the lack of selection and I can’t really blame them. Chicken nuggets, a turkey sandwich, a hot dog or PBJ are all the kids are offered. Some places only serve two or three of those items and I’ve only seen one kids menu thus far to include a cheeseburger. I’ve got a nine year old with a ferocious metabolism and a healthy appetite and she finds the meals sparce.
Sides don’t get any more interesting than fries, carrot sticks, or applesauce. Even the adult quick serve choices seemed parred down considerably. This certainly puts more a damper on our fun than the weather or crowds.

By far the worst vacation I have ever had. 5k of truly wasted money. Plus another $600 in tips for dinners. Animal Kingdom Lodge was terrible. Same sheets everyday for 6 days, beds made 2 days of six in the room (my wife and I have always kept a very clean room but damn I was tempted to rip the sheets off just to get them to make them) and the staff was suprising very rude. I found this comment coming from others staying at the AKL as well . The delux dinning package is a joke. Even 2 months out we could not get a table between 4 and 7pm. We were told ever time we called we have tables available after 9pm! Are you kidding me. 9PM. Its June and you are tellinig me I can not get a table for Aug 25th between 4pm and 7pm. “Thats right sir, would you like for me to put you down for 9PM?” What parent in their right mind sits a child down for a 9pm dinner!?! Fast Pass is a Joke. Example. The couple we were talking to went into the Fast Pass lane with a wait time of 20mins. We went in the Standing line with a wait time of 40mins. Guess who we were sitting next to on the ride? Yeah the guy was pissed as hell he said. “Why even bother with these damn fast passes at all” I told him I could not agree more. Back to the Dinning plan. I think the service at table Dinning really needs some improvement. 2 1/2 hrs to complete a meal is a joke. It took us over 40 mins to just get dessert. And by the time dessert showed up we found out that they were charging us for EACH cup of coffee we drank while waiting. Not a big deal, but damn coffee was 2.95 a CUP!!! 2.95 a cup for instant coffee. Wow! wow…Now you are asking your self how did you get charged for coffee on a delux dinning plan. Simple, you only get one cold or hot drink with your meal. Yeah the dessert comes with the plan but not the coffee to enjoy it. From here on out it is back to taking our girls to the islands and doing crusies. Good job Disney you got us. But just this once. Walt Disney must be rolling in his grave seeing how his Kingdom has fallen.
We were lucky enough to get one-day passes from a Disney employee, and it was STILL the only lousy day of our week-plus in Orlando. Halfway through the day, I was thinking that if we’d had to pay to get in, I would have taken a few Dwarves hostage. Universal is so much better it’s not funny. So is Aquatica. Thank God we didn’t stay on the premises, or pay for the “convenience” of eating Disney’s sub-cafeteria food more than once. Trussssst in me, jusssssst in me– follow the second star on the right and get the hell out of the most overrated theme park in the country.
Totally Agree. I find it unusual people seem to take it as a personality deficit when Disney is revealed for what it is. Overwhelmingly crowded. It’s a great park, but c’mon, it’s long line after long line. Lines for rides, food, pic opportunities, even the bathroom. And if you don’t find central Florida hot on an August afternoon, you’re suffering delusions from heat exhaustion.
My hat is off to the author for telling it like it is.
Just got back from two days at the “World.” January 1st at Epcot and the 2nd at Disney. Big time crowded…spent the entire time dodging idiots pushing their lazy kids in strollers, making my way around dozens of parked strollers (WTF?? Don’t kids walk any more???) and of course, fat people in scooters.
On the positive side, we used the FastPass thing and it worked really well for us.
I’m scared now. Going in two days with three year old son. HELPPPPPP!
