OUR TAKE ON FLORENCE
Saturday mornings in Florence, Alabama usually means biscuits and chocolate gravy. The people simply enjoy weekends, but not just because of the break from work or of the food, but also because of the various opportunities to have fun and adventure. Thus, when your family takes a Florence vacation, there will be more fun and exciting things to do on a weekend.
Fun can be listening to music, especially the blues. After all, Florence is the hometown of W.C. Handy, the legendary Father of the Blues. Fun Florence vacations also include a tour of the museums where Florence pays tribute to its rich past. One museum is the Florence Indian Mound and Museum. The domiciliary mound, which is the largest in the Tennessee Valley and believed to exist for more than a thousand years, is a testament to Native American workmanship. Another museum is the Pope’s Tavern Museum. Formerly a stagecoach shop, it was turned into a hospital that cared for both Union and Confederate wounded soldiers.
For an enhanced sentimental trip to the past, travelers can stay in one of the nearby Florence accommodations and watch this building and imagine how it housed the wounded of the Civil War. The imagined scene is inspiring. The kids who are in this Florence vacation may also be inspired by visiting Helen Keller’s home or staying in one of the Florence lodgings in the same area. In the area, the architecture of houses is reminiscent of the Victorian era. Florence, after all, is Alabama’s Renaissance City.
