Our Take on Bessemer, Alabama


Bessemer is located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is the birthplace of the football and baseball star Bo Jackson and of the NFL player Kerry Rhodes of the New York Jets. And this is why the city can be a major attraction for sports fans or practicing athletes.

There is the nearby Roosevelt Park, which offers facilities for tennis, baseball, softball, and jogging. There is the Oak Mountain State Park which provides a golf course and several horse stables. And there is the Bessemer YMCA, which is a 27-acre of sports wonderland for those who are interested in racquetball, outdoor swimming, track and field, tennis, and softball.

For those who love nature, there are the West Jefferson County lakes and forestland and the Tannehill Historic Park. Bessemer vacations can also be physically stimulating if the city is visited by the whole family. The reason is the 60-acre amusement theme park of the Visionland. This area, divided into two sections, the Splash Beach Water Park and the Magic City USA Theme Park, earned Bessemer the reputation of “Marvel City.” There are numerous adventures for the whole family, including gravity-defying space shots, whitewater rafting, “Hurricane” merry-go-rounds, Pirate Spanish ships and other water adventures.
